The Run That Wasn't............

So I was totally motivated, dressed in a very cute new running skirt and the weather was absolutely perfect!!! I got home from work after a full rest day yesterday and thought that the knee pain had subsided. I had speedwork on the schedule with a 1 mile warmup, 1 x 200, 1 x 400, 1 x 800, and 1 x 1K, with a 1 mile cooldown. I was totally psyched to be running at 5:30PM without sweating my A$$ off!!!

It was a nice continued to be a nice thought until about .5 miles in to the warmup mile. The twinge hit the knee and got worse and worse. I finished the mile and stopped to stretch. Thought that if I stretched it out, I could attempt the speedwork.......not so much. Did the 200M in a slower pace than goal and attempted the 400M and was on pace unril the pain got so bad that my knee was buckling!! I am soooo frustrated!! I even called hubby to see if he was home yet cuz I wanted him to pick my hobbling butt off the side of the road on his way home. He was already home and making dinner ( yes, he is the greatest hubby on earth!) so I continued to hobble. I have been icing and stretching and wondering what I could have done to my knee....ugghhhh.  Right hand side of right knee, sharp and shooting pains. Not sure if it is connected to the sciatic nerve pain in my buttocks and low back or if it is my IT band???  I hope I figure it out because I don't want to miss any more runs, I am feeling so strong and don't want to lose this momentum....... 9 on the schedule for this weekend......what's a runner mama to do??????

    I can't begin to guess about the knee. I'm a firm believer of not giving advice if I have NO CLUE what I'm talking about! :P -- I bet there are other runners out there that have similar pain that could give you some insight!

    I just hope you start feeling better soon. Good for you getting out there though and giving it a shot! :)

  2. Oh no. Hopefully it's nothing and you will feel better next time you run. The outer knee is where the IT band runs, do you stretch it regularly? Sorry it's giving you trouble and hopefully it resolves soon. Take care.

  3. ughh my IT started hurting after some speedwork monday and I'm nervous too. I think yours sound a little like IT.

  5. Ouch - I feel your pain, literally. I have been having IT band issues since my half marathon! Its very frustrating. Google IT band stretches and if you have a foam roller work with that. You shuold take it easy so that it doesnt get worse.

  6. I was going to post, literally, what Manderz said. I have had ITB issues since the Marathon in April-and severe pain in my knees as a result. Just recently I have heard the foam roller and massive stretches can help alleviate most of the discomfort...if that is not the case, maybe time for a visit to the doc?

  7. Find a sport doc, and make an appointment asap. If it is ITBS, it is not a quick healing problem, unfortunately. A cortisone shot can begin to help.

    If it is something else, you will need the help of a good physical therapist, preferably one with a running background.

    I'm not trying to be negative, because I have been through 2 injuries this year. I went to the doc immediately when I encountered the 2nd one and was able to get back on the road much quicker.
